In video call sextortion scams, victims match with an attractive profile on Tinder, Bumble, or Instagram who quickly suggests moving to Skype, FaceTime, or WhatsApp for an intimate video chat. The scammer plays a pre-recorded adult video feed through their webcam, encouraging the victim to reciprocate. Within seconds of the victim undressing, the scammer terminates the call, displays a recorded screen capture of the victim alongside a collage of their Instagram follower list, and demands an immediate cryptocurrency ransom.
關鍵警訊與破綻特徵
1Rushing to an Unmoderated Video Call
They insist on leaving the dating app within minutes and immediately request a video call on Skype, WhatsApp, or Telegram.
2Video Audio Issues / "Can You Hear Me?"
On the call, the model appears to undress but the video has no sound or lips do not sync with conversation, claiming audio issues.
3Asking for Your Social Media Handles First
Before the call, they ask for your Instagram, Facebook, or LinkedIn handle to "see more photos of you" — in reality, they scrape your follower list.
Technical Modus Operandi of Sextortion Rings
- Virtual Camera Hijack: Scammers use OBS Virtual Camera or ManyCam to inject pre-recorded pornographic webcam models into Skype or WhatsApp video streams.
- Automated Follower Scraping: Python scripts scrape your public Instagram follower list and family connections within seconds of receiving your username.
- The Extortion Escalation Loop: Paying NEVER stops the blackmailer. In over 95% of cases, paying the initial demand triggers an immediate second demand for double the amount.
防範措施與應對步驟
DO NOT PAY UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES
Paying proves you have money and guarantees escalating demands. Cutting off communication is the single most effective deterrent.
Lock Down All Social Media Accounts
Immediately set your Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn profiles to private and change your usernames temporarily.
Preserve Evidence and Report
Screenshot the extortion message and account handles, then block the blackmailer without further engagement. Report to Take It Down (NCMEC) or FBI IC3.
常見問題
Will the scammer really send the video to my followers?▼
Rarely. In over 90% of cases, blackmailers do not distribute the video once blocked because sending it burns their accounts, alerts law enforcement, and eliminates any hope of financial payout.
What should I do if I already paid them money?▼
Stop communicating immediately. Do not send another cent. Contact your bank or crypto exchange, freeze compromised cards, and report the transaction.
